Jonathan Houlding is a BAFTA-winning Production Designer and artist based in London. His work spans feature film, television, commercials, and fine art, all of which is rooted in the belief that space/environment/habitat is the material through which we come to know ourselves and the world we inhabit.

Space, in Houlding's understanding, is never passive. It accumulates. It presses back. The rooms we inhabit encode memory, produce emotion, and shape thought in ways we rarely register consciously. To design an environment, for a film, a campaign, or a gallery wall, is to make decisions about how a human being will ultimately feel. That understanding is fundemental to all apsects of his work. In film, it means the world a story inhabits is not as a backdrop, but as presence, a character in its own right, with its own history, atmosphere, and psychological weight.

Over two decades at the highest level of the industry, working across feature film and internationally recognised commercial campaigns, that conviction has produced work of consistent visual ambition. Currently in post production with Edward Berger on ‘The Riders’ for A24/Scott Free/Plan B. Jonathan is Art Directors Guild of America Award winner for both Poor Things and The Martian. His commercial work has been awarded at AICP, the Clios, The One Show, ADC, amongst others, including campaigns for PlayStation, Samsung, Canal+, and Revolut.

His fine art practice pursues the same preoccupations in the studio. Bodies of work in graphite, paint, object and digital drawing examine architectural form, material surface, and the psychological residue of constructed environments. These are not studies made alongside the film work. They are the same work, in a different key.

Work held in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, the British Council, Sammlung Lenikus, the Lloyd Webber Foundation, and the UCL Art Museum. Exhibited internationally. Taught at the Royal College of Art, the Slade School of Fine Art, the National Film and Television School, and London Metropolitan University. Co-founded and curated an Arts Council-funded gallery programme in London, presenting work by over 150 international artists including Martha Rosler, Anthony McCall, Dryden Goodwin, and Hans Op de Beeck.

Graduate of the Royal College of Art, Thames and Hudson and Parallel Prize winner. Has worked in Ireland, France, Hungary, Thailand, Hong Kong, Mexico, Croatia, and the UAE, among others. Voting member of BAFTA.
